Our Story

About our name...

Red Bug by the LakePeople ask us all the time, so here’s the story:

"Red Bug", a 1963 Red VW Beetle, was Trudy's first car. It cost $125.00 - which explains a lot! Red Bug had multiple mechanical difficulties: no starter, no heater, no gearshift knob, and a dome light that only worked when it wanted. At that time, Trudy lived in Chicago where winter driving was challenging and COLD. Any trip in Red Bug required multiple blankets and quilts to wrap up to avoid freezing, a towel to wipe steam off the windows and a wool mitten to rub a spot on the windshield warm enough to melt the sleet and ice.

Regardless, her years with Red Bug taught Trudy independence, perspective, patience and determination, as well as how to multi-task, to focus on the immediate - and how to laugh, and pray!

This pretty much sums up the Red Bug philosophy. At Red Bug, every trip's an adventure, and it is always fun!

About ‘the girls’

There are four of us now: Trudy McFarlane, Cindy McDaniel, Susan Williams, and Jill McElya.

In 2010 Trudy had the inspiration (and foresight!) to open a yarn shop. With determination, patience, perseverance, and prayer she ordered yarn and needles and found a small, charming space on 3rd street. She hung out her shingle, and called her shop Red Bug on 3rd.

Business was good - too good for one person to operate, so Jill bought the shop and Trudy stayed on as buyer, knitting instructor and consultant. Jill's good taste and styling added antiques and unique gifts to the mix. Red Bug on 3rd grew and grew, and after 5 years was bulging at the seams! Jill and Trudy realized Red Bug needed room to breathe. So in 2015 they formed an LLC partnership with friends and fellow knitters Cindy and Susan. The girls are now officially K4tog, LLC.

About the shop

Redbug StoreAfter months of searching, with a determination to keep it charming and remain in Murray's historic downtown district, Jill found the perfect location - the house on the corner of South 6th and Maple streets. Formerly owned by the Diuguid family, it had been recently renovated. Its tall ceilings, warm wood floors, beautiful windows and creative spaces compliment the shop's colorful, delightful yarn and gift lines.

A new location necessitated a new name: Red Bug Yarn & Gifts.

Red Bug carries an extensive collection of unique home accents, kitchenware, linens, bath and body products, essential oils and delicious gourmet foods. We love it all.

But, to be honest, our passion has always been the yarn. We stock ample amounts of beautiful, quality yarn in as many weights, fibers, and color ways as possible. Our yarn prices range from inexpensive to "the sky's the limit!" We truly have something for everyone.

There's room to breathe.... Come, have an adventure!
